The new standard in LTO tape archiving. Desktop and rack systems connected via SAS or Thunderbolt ports.
At next week's IBC 2025 trade show in Amsterdam, Sonnettech is set to unveil several exciting new products. Virtually all of them are designed from the ground up to support the latest Thunderbolt 5 standard. Here are some of the new products announced.
At first glance, it may seem that connecting a high-performance graphics card via an external eGPU enclosure limited to a Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, or USB4 interface with a port bandwidth of 40 Gb/s, or approximately 5 GB/s, should result in a significant performance drop. For comparison, a standard PCIe 4.0 x16 slot offers a bandwidth of up to 32 GB/s. Since the difference is more than sixfold, why are the actual losses in games and applications usually only 10%, reaching a maximum of 20%?
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HP), International Business Machines Corporation (IBM), and Quantum Corporation, technology providers within the LTO Technology Partnership Consortium (TPC), published the specifications for the 10th generation LTO Ultrium format in mid-August, which is now available for licensing.
The development of artificial intelligence and modern computing methods increasingly depends on efficient hardware infrastructure. In addition to processors and graphics cards, which play a key role in training and running models, the importance of fast mass storage media is growing. In this context, M.2 NVMe drives occupy a special place, as they prove to be an indispensable component of modern high-performance computing systems in many applications.
