EDID Emulation – What Is It and Why Should You Choose AV Access iDock KVM Switches?
When working with multiple computers using a KVM switch, one of the most common issues is the need to re-detect the monitor after switching the signal source. This can result in changes to the resolution, icons shifting on the desktop, application windows moving to different locations, and sometimes even a temporary loss of the image. The solution to this problem is EDID Emulation technology, available in professional AV Access iDock KVM switches offered by Abart Pro.
What is EDID?
EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) is a set of information stored in the monitor, containing its technical parameters, such as supported resolution, refresh rate, color depth, HDR standard, and audio transmission capabilities. When the monitor is connected, the computer reads this data and automatically selects the appropriate display settings.
What is EDID Emulation?
EDID Emulation technology involves storing the monitor’s EDID information within the KVM switch. This allows the computer to “see” the monitor at all times, even when the user switches to a second computer or temporarily disconnects the display.
In practice, this means that Windows or macOS does not detect that the monitor has been disconnected; it retains the selected resolution and multi-monitor layout, and all open applications remain in exactly the same places.
Key Benefits of EDID Emulation
EDID Emulation technology offers a number of benefits during everyday use:
- no change in resolution when switching between computers,
- preservation of the layout of windows and icons on the desktop,
- no need for the operating system to redetect monitors,
- stable support for 4K, 5K, and 8K monitors,
- faster switching between computers,
- greater stability of the connection to the graphics card,
- and a comfortable user experience on both macOS and Windows.
EDID Emulation or EDID Pass-through?
It’s important to distinguish between the two technologies used in KVM switches.
EDID Pass-through simply forwards information from the monitor to the computer. When the monitor is disconnected or switched to another source, the computer detects its absence and may change the display configuration.
EDID Emulation stores a copy of the EDID data and continuously presents it to the computer. As a result, the operating system always considers the monitor to be connected, eliminating display configuration issues.
