LTO (Linear Tape-Open) is a magnetic tape-based data archiving standard, mainly used for storing large amounts of data for long periods of time. Here are the main differences between LTO-7, LTO-8 and LTO-9 tapes:
Capacity:
- LTO-7: Has a capacity of up to about 15 TB per tape in compressed mode (6 TB uncompressed).
- LTO-8: Offers a capacity of up to about 30 TB per tape compressed (12 TB uncompressed).
- LTO-9: Will offer a capacity of up to about 45 TB per tape compressed (18 TB uncompressed).
Transfer speed:
- LTO-7: Has a data transfer rate of about 750 MB/s in compressed mode.
- LTO-8: Has a data transfer rate of about 900 MB/s in compressed mode.
- LTO-9: Will have an expected data transfer rate of about 1,000 MB/s in compressed mode.
Technology:
- LTO-7: Uses Barium Ferrite (BaFe) technology to write data.
- LTO-8: Continues to use Barium Ferrite (BaFe) technology to write data.
- LTO-9: Also relies on Barium Ferrite (BaFe) technology to write data.
Backward compatibility:
- LTO-7: It is backward compatible with previous generations of LTO (capable of reading data from LTO-6 tapes and writing to LTO-6).
- LTO-8: Has backward compatibility with LTO-7 and the ability to write data to LTO-7 tapes.
- LTO-9: Will be backward compatible with LTO-8 and LTO-7, but the ability to write data to older tapes will be limited.
Power consumption and technical requirements:
- LTO-7: Uses less power than previous generations and offers some improvements in energy efficiency.
- LTO-8: Continues the trend toward energy efficiency, but may require some hardware upgrades to reach full performance.
- LTO-9: Will strive to further reduce power consumption and may require some hardware upgrades to reach full performance.
In general, each successive generation of LTO tapes offers increased capacity, data transfer speeds and technological improvements over previous versions. However, as new generations of LTO tapes are introduced, there may also be requirements to upgrade hardware and software to take full advantage of the new features and capabilities.
