Professional storage enters a new era. Just a few years ago, most professional Apple users opted for external SSDs or simple RAID enclosures connected via Thunderbolt 3. These solutions were sufficient for working with Full HD footage or individual 4K projects, but the advancement of digital cameras, high-resolution photography, and increasingly demanding applications has led to a significant rise in storage requirements.

When working with multiple computers using a KVM switch, one of the most common issues is the need to re-detect the monitor after switching the signal source. This can result in changes to the resolution, icons shifting on the desktop, application windows moving to different locations, and sometimes even a temporary loss of the image. The solution to this problem is EDID Emulation technology, available in professional AV Access iDock KVM switches offered by Abart Pro.

OWC unveils 6,000 MB/s Thunderbolt 5 Envoy Ultra SSD

The modern world is living in an ever-increasing rush, and time waits for no one, especially when we have a big project to complete, such as editing a new movie or backing up a huge number of digital photos.

Other World Computing has announced its latest weapon in the storage wars with the launch of the new Envoy Ultra Thunderbolt 5 SSD. The SSD, which is expected to begin shipments in October, is designed for Mac and PC devices with Thunderbolt or USB4 ports, and has speeds in excess of 6,000 MB/s, making it up to twice as fast as Thunderbolt 4 and USB4.

Larry O'Connor is the founder and CEO at OWC and said a few words about the new SSD: “Intel's innovative Thunderbolt 5 technology sets a new standard for performance and simple connectivity, and OWC's Envoy Ultra SSD is a perfect example of how this technology can be used to meet the needs of the most demanding users, harnessing the full potential of Thunderbolt 5, but also opening up new possibilities for professionals and creatives alike.”

In addition to speeds in excess of 6,000 MB/s, which is double that of Thunderbolt 4 and USB4, the new drive will work with Macs, PCs, iPad Pro, Chromebooks and Surface devices, although maximum speeds depend on whether the host machine has a Thunderbolt 5 port. Backward compatibility means that the SSD will work with previous iterations of Thunderbolt.

The rugged Envoy Ultra drive is water and dust resistant, as well as crushproof. In addition to being bus-powered via a built-in Thunderbolt cable, the Envoy Ultra is quiet thanks to an aluminum design that effectively dissipates heat without an additional fan.

Along with the Envoy Ultra, the OWC Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) cable has also appeared on the market. This is a high-performance cable designed to deliver the full potential of Thunderbolt 5 speeds, offering up to 80 Gb / s bidirectional data rates and up to 120 Gb / s for higher display bandwidth needs. The new cable is also compatible with Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, USB4 and USB-C devices.

Availability: The new Envoy Ultra Thunderbolt 5 SSD will be available in 2.0TB and 4.0TB capacities in October. Meanwhile, OWC Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) cables are available immediately from us
