HighPoint RocketStor 6661A is a case that allows you to add any PCIe 3.0 x4, x8 or x16 card to your computer via a Thunderbolt™ connector. With the RS6661A enclosure, you can expand the functionality of your Mac with macOS or Windows PC with media capture cards, Ethernet, Fiber Channel, external storage/RAID controller cards and more.
HighPoint's RocketStor 6661A PCIe External Enclosure may have a complicated name, but it's a top-notch product and extremely easy to set up. At its current price, this is the most affordable PCIe 3.0 x16 case that can accommodate full-length cards.
Construction
Rocketstor 6661A is characterized by a solid, all-metal construction, including a retractable cover secured with easy-to-remove screws. The case is not designed for use with an eGPU (external graphics card), but is wide enough to accommodate normal-sized PCIe cards in a single x16 slot (sixteen PCIe lanes). The slot is the same as in desktop computers, and like in PCs, the cards are held in place by a screw through the top of their bracket.
HighPoint RS6661A is not classically simple in appearance and is beautiful in operation. Matte aluminum, with a series of perforations for the circulation of air sucked in by twin small fans - thermally it is on point. On the back there are two Thunderbolt (USB-C) ports and an AC power port. There is no dedicated DisplayPort port, but you can of course use the second Thunderbolt port to connect a monitor via an appropriate adapter.
Although there is no switch, RocketStor 6661A turns itself on and off when power is supplied to the Thunderbolt bus (the computer to which the case is connected will be turned on or off).
Efficiency
Rocketstor 6661A tested using a 960GB Intel 905P x4 PCIe/NVMe SSD, the same one used in the Akitio Node Lite with Optane. The test results are shown in the chart below.
The case works with cards such as BlackMagic, Avid, Bluefish444, Sonnet, OWC and others.
It is the only one in this price range that offers expansion to the PCIE 3.0 x16 standard. It is fully compatible with Apple Mac computers with Intel and Apple Silicon processors , i.e. M1 and M2 series . It can also be used with computers with a Thunderbolt port and Windows. Works with most PCIe cards compatible with the Thunderbolt standard.
