Thunderbolt™ continues to be a cutting-edge technology, offering high bandwidth (40 Gbps) to peripheral devices and, more importantly, providing versatility for mobile and desktop devices. Thanks to Thunderbolt™, the television and film industry has gained greater flexibility in managing its creative resources. As 4K, 6K and 8K become more widely adopted, traditional storage solutions are often too expensive to accommodate and protect the growing volume of data.

Connecting the Thunderbolt™ ATTO ThunderLink 3128 adapter to an external, often portable 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA device equipped with LTO™ 7, 8 or 9 tape drives provides a simple and affordable way to store, archive and transport large amounts of content.

The combination of the ATTO ThunderLink 3128 adapter, Thunderbolt™ up to 12Gb/s SAS/SATA and the latest generation of LTO tape drives increases the efficiency of many elements of the content creation process. Ultimately, this allows it to handle increasing visual resolution and media complexity (4K, 6K, 8K, 3D, AI, etc.) which create more and larger files that need to be managed in a cost-effective manner.

Data carriers for cameras and cameras

Most digital cameras save images directly to a solid-state device (SSD) or removable drive. Such media can be quite expensive. Quickly transfer content to tape using Thunderbolt™-enabled notebook computers to efficiently reuse media, reducing the number of SSDs you use or additional drives you need to purchase.

Post-production

Post-production is the place where all the components of a project come together: camera or camcorder footage, digital effects, graphics and sound. These elements are edited, improved, assembled and checked many times. Ideally, this collection of medium to high data rate content would be in a shared storage pool that many creative professionals from different companies could access from different geographic locations. In reality, however, sharing content in this way is expensive and poses quite a logistical challenge. ATTO ThunderLink 3128 Thunderbolt™ up to 12Gb/s and desktop SAS LTO devices provide an affordable alternative to exchanging content files that can be loaded to disk for editing, then transferred back to tape to free up expensive online storage capacity for new work.

Transport

Network solutions can be used for many distribution needs, but given the large size of media files, significant network bandwidth is required. This increases both the complexity and cost of such a project. Large amounts of data can be transferred to tape via Thunderbolt™ and transmitted faster and more economically than over the network/Internet - an attractive prospect for media houses that produce terabytes of data every day. LTO tape encryption features also help keep data safe from falling into the wrong hands.

Transcoding

Thunderbolt™ technology also adds value by simplifying the transcoding process. You can seamlessly ingest, transcode and save to multiple sources simultaneously by connecting cameras, primary storage and near-line storage directly to your workstation, saving you a huge amount of time and money.

The ability to send transcoded files to more than one location also helps you secure and back up your original footage and easily submit it for editing.

Backup

Losing an entire day of production is very costly. Therefore, backing up daily recordings to LTO tapes is a common standard. Archiving via a SAS tape solution connected to a Thunderbolt™ port via the ATTO ThunderLink 3128 also meets the requirements imposed by insurance companies on many film productions to maintain multiple backup copies of content.

Versatility

The ATTO ThunderLink 3128 Thunderbolt™ adapter has two external 12 Gb/s SAS ports, so you can connect two external SAS devices to one Thunderbolt™ interface. One of them may be an LTO archiving device in the LTO-7, LTO-8 or LTO-9 standards, and the other may be, for example, an efficient disk array in an external SAS housing. Thanks to this solution, both a backup device and near-line mass storage can be connected to a computer equipped with a Thunderbolt™ port via ATTO ThunderLink 3128. It is an economical, reliable and efficient solution both outdoors, on a film set, in the studio and in post-production.
